It's nice to be green. We're not talking about hugging trees and adopting penguins - we're talking about making savings on energy bills that come straight off the bottom line. Total power budgets can have a huge cost impact on embedded applications that form part of any large retail, digital signage or smart building installation.

Energy efficiency is one of the most cost effective ways to increase productivity and quality. Savings on energy costs are defined as bottom-line savings which go straight to the profit line. And energy savings are permanent. Additionally, we are dealing with a increasingly environmentally savvy public who are looking to the retail, gov't and entertainment sectors to promote and utilise green technologies.

This is just one reason why you need to be looking at our RE2 single board computer for your next embedded design project. This OMAP 3530 ARM Cortex A8 embedded board with POWERVR SGX Graphics Accelerator can smoothly drive 720p resolution video content, with a typical power dissemination of circa 2watts - a fraction of the energy cost of an X86 based solution. Lets look at that in the context of a digital signage project. A PC based player will  on average use 100 watts of electricity, equaling out to 876kWh/year. In layman terms, a really nice stainless steel side-by-side refrigerator/freezer (25 Cubic Feet) is 571 kWh/year. With a medium size installation of 50 players - this is almost equivalent to continuously running 75 of those refrigerators at the same time. And don't forget the savings on building air-conditioning.

The RE2 single board computer supports all of the key hardware features of a solid embedded engine - 256MB LPDDR and 512MB Flash memory, Serial Ports (3), 10/100Mbit Ethernet, Audio, Touch Screen controller, optional SD, USB Host Ports (4), USB Device Port (1), 12 general purpose I/Os,  DVI/HDMI port, camera interface, Wi-fi and Bluetooth. We also have optional GPRS, GPS functionality and extended temperature ranges. The RE1 is the lower cost SBC in the range, suitable for customers not requiring moving video playout.

For developers working with embedded HMI based applications, we have put together REsolution  - an OTS package of mounting, interfacing and display options. REsolution makes integrating the RE single board computers and display fast and easy - eliminating the usual cabling, signalling and power issues and securing problem-free fit, form and function upgrades for the future.
