REsolution - big multimedia performance in a small board

If you are need to drive rich multimedia content, your processor needs to be up to the job - jerky images or stuttering RSS text feeds are simply not an option. Guaranteeing this level of performance has historically required faster CPU cores and additional graphics cards - pushing up the system cost and power envelop. Imagine driving crisp, smooth, high-resolution video feeds from a 720MHz CPU - all the benefits of a very low power, cost effective hardware platform without sacrificing any output quality whatsoever. Based on the OMAP 3530 ARM Cortex A8 platform with POWERVR SGX Graphics Accelerator, the RE2 single board computer can smoothly drive 720p resolution video content, with a typical power dissemination of circa 2watts - leaving any X86 based multimedia application standing when it comes to price and power. To get an idea of what these processors are capable of, they have been rated at about the same speed at Intel's Atom processor per clock cycle. However, the actual video playout is exclusively handled by the additional 520MHz DSP - a specialised processor optimised for hi-speed digital signal processing. This means the RE2 ARM Cortex A8 architecture supports H.264 4CIF resolution full duplex real-time MPEG2 and MPEG 4 encode and decode more efficiently than an X86 based platform.

Blue Chip also offer the REsolution package of OTS display, mounting and cabling kits for the RE2 SBC. REsolution brings together all the basic building blocks needed for a versatile embedded multimedia or HMI module, you don’t have to manage the associated issues of integrating a display and embedded board – the mounting, cabling, signalling, power and connectors are all sorted out. The whole package is managed for long term availability and problem free fit, form and function upgrades. Board power dissipation is circa 2 watts at 720MHz, supporting all of the key hardware features of a solid embedded engine - 256MB LPDDR and 512MB Flash memory, Serial Ports (3), 10/100Mbit Ethernet, Audio, Touch Screen controller, optional SD, USB Host Ports (4), USB Device Port (1), 12 general purpose I/Os, DVI/HDMI port, camera interface, Wi-fi and Bluetooth.

An innovative expansion port is available to accommodate a range of flexible add-on modules, for example an OTS CM1 module brings full GPRS, GPS functionality to the RE2, ideal for telematics and in-vehicle applications. All of this functionality has been designed into a board similar in size to a playing card.
