Concerned about the demise of Windows XP?
For the third time since Vista's release in January 2007, Microsoft has pushed out XP's availability beyond the official phase-out deadline of January 31, 2009. The end of January remains the cut-off date for PC vendors to purchase licenses, but they can take delivery of those licenses through May 30, 2009. Despite this latest reprieve, there is still the concern that the eventual demise of XP will require significant re-development effort in migrating applications to a new platform such as Windows Vista. The provision of Windows XP Professional for Embedded Systems effectively gives Blue Chip Technology customers a technically identical product to Windows XP, with availability through until December 2016.
Product Information
Windows XP Professional for Embedded Systems is technically identical to the standard version of Windows XP Professional used for general purpose computing devices. Only the licensing terms have changed, limiting its use to fixed function devices such as kiosks, ATM Systems, POS devices, industrial automation, and complex medical devices. As such, Blue Chip Technology will be offering Windows XP Professional for Embedded Systems across its product range from Feb 2009. It is targetted for devices that have a strict need for Microsoft Windows XP Professional application compatibility and where reduced footprint is not a primary design requirement.
Windows XP Professional for Embedded Systems is not a componentized version of the Windows OS and the OS image size is not as customizable. Windows XP Professional for Embedded Systems is part of the Windows Embedded Enterprise product family, an umbrella name for
• Windows Vista Ultimate for Embedded Systems
• Windows Vista Business for Embedded Systems
• Windows XP Professional for Embedded Systems
These products are fully functional versions of Microsoft’s desktop operating system intended for use in purpose-built hardware and application software.
Product Life Cycle
This schedule outlines the product availability and distribution end of life dates for Windows Embedded products. Licenses must be purchased before January 31, but can be delivered through to May 30, 2009.
