RE1 SBC - great replacement for EOL Xscale boards

« back to news

RISC based embedded boards continue to be a key part of the engineer’s arsenal in designing applications to a very tight power budget and target cost. The wide adoption of single board computers based on the PXA XScale is testament to the usefulness of these small-footprint, low power boards.  The PXA255 - Intel's first generation of PXA XScale processors subsequently sold to Marvell Technology Group in June 2006, is no longer recommended for new builds. The discontinuation of the PXA255 will leave designers looking for a suitable alternative with the right performance and price point.  The RE1 single board computer from Blue Chip Technology is a good fit on all counts with 1 off pricing starting at £99.95 and a 2013 life statement.

With board power dissipation starting at 1.5 watts at 333MHz and 2 watts at 500MHz, RE1 is an ideal candidate for operation via Power Over Ethernet (POE). Key hardware features include SDRAM and Flash memory, Serial Ports (3), Ethernet, Audio, Touch Screen, optional SD or Compact Flash, USB Host Port (4), USB Client Port (1) and 13 TTL general purpose I/Os. These standard I/O interfaces and features are made available on standard connectors on the back side of the main CPU board. Software drivers are provided for each of these I/O functions.

We’ve included an 8 bit expansion interface for customers to add custom I/O designs enhancing the flexibility of the RE1. We can design to custom requirements or provide the board schematics and expertise to support you own designs. All of this functionality has been designed into a board slightly bigger than a playing card.

The RE1 single board computer (SBC) has been designed to be used with the REsolution display kit, bringing together all the basic building blocks needed for a versatile embedded HMI module. Call Blue Chip Technology Sales on 01829 772000 to discuss how the RE1 can help your low power design project.
